The North Central Railway (NCR) has achieved a significant milestone in sustainable transportation by developing a specialized solar-assisted passenger coach in Prayagraj. This pilot project, successfully executed between July 20 and July 21, 2026, is designed to reduce the national transporter’s reliance on conventional energy sources by harnessing sunlight to power essential onboard amenities.

How the Solar System Works
The core of this innovation lies in the high-efficiency rooftop solar photovoltaic panels, which generate approximately 7 kWp (kilowatt-peak) of clean energy. Unlike traditional systems that rely on alternators—which only produce electricity while the train is in motion—this solar setup ensures a continuous and reliable power supply. By charging the coach’s battery bank directly from sunlight, the railway effectively bypasses the energy losses typically associated with mechanical and electrical conversion in standard train systems.
Benefits for Passengers and Operations
Railway officials are optimistic about the long-term impact of this project. By integrating solar energy, the NCR expects to see substantial energy savings and a marked reduction in overall carbon emissions. Furthermore, the system is designed to improve the longevity of onboard batteries while simultaneously decreasing routine maintenance requirements.
Shivam Sharma, Chief PRO of NCR, highlighted that this project is a strategic move toward making coach operations more sustainable. The initiative was closely monitored by General Manager Naresh Pal Singh, who has been a strong proponent of adopting green technologies to modernize Indian Railways. Initially, these solar-assisted coaches are planned for deployment in General and Sleeper class compartments, as the department looks to scale these eco-friendly solutions across its network based on the performance data gathered from this pilot run.
