Indian Railways has issued a comprehensive update regarding the protocols for passengers looking to stay at railway stations overnight. Whether you are waiting for an early morning connection or a late-night arrival, understanding the rules for waiting rooms and retiring facilities is essential for a smooth journey. These guidelines ensure that station premises remain secure while providing necessary comfort to travelers.
- General waiting rooms are accessible to passengers with valid tickets, typically opening two hours before departure and closing two hours after arrival.
- Retiring rooms and dormitories are available for booking at major stations for passengers with confirmed or RAC tickets.
- Online bookings can be made up to 60 days in advance, with stays ranging from 3 to 48 hours.
- Revised policies for 2026 include specific guidelines for overnight train travel, including quiet hours and charging socket restrictions.
Using General Waiting Rooms
For passengers with valid PNR numbers, access to general waiting rooms is determined by their ticket class. While the standard rule allows for a two-hour window before and after a train’s scheduled time, this can be extended up to six hours at larger stations during the night, subject to the discretion of local railway officials. Passengers must register their ticket details upon entry, and regular checks are conducted by ticket examiners to prevent unauthorized occupancy.
Retiring Rooms and Dormitory Facilities
If you require a more comfortable stay, Indian Railways provides retiring rooms and dormitories. To book these, you must hold a confirmed (CNF) or Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) ticket; waitlisted passengers are not eligible. Bookings can be made via the IRCTC portal from 60 days in advance up to four hours before departure. Depending on the station and room type (AC or non-AC), charges range from ₹50 to ₹2000 for a 12-hour slot. Please note the 2026 cancellation policy: you will face a 10% deduction for cancellations made more than 48 hours in advance, while no refunds are provided for cancellations within four hours of the check-in time.
Important Updates for Overnight Train Travel
Beyond station facilities, Indian Railways has reinforced travel etiquette for 2026. Designated sleeping hours are set from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM, during which middle berth passengers must keep their berths folded. To enhance safety, charging sockets in long-distance trains are switched off between 11:00 PM and 5:00 AM. Furthermore, passengers are advised to maintain quiet hours after 10:00 PM, and Ticket Examiners will generally avoid waking passengers for inspections during these hours. Additionally, as of April 1, 2026, passengers are permitted to modify their boarding station up to 30 minutes before the scheduled departure of their train.
