Aligarh Junction, a historic 159-year-old railway hub, is gearing up for a massive transformation under the Indian Railways’ ambitious Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The redevelopment project, which is estimated to cost between ₹400 crore and ₹800 crore, aims to turn the station into a modern transit facility that mirrors the amenities and aesthetics of a modern airport. This initiative is part of a nationwide effort to modernize 1,275 to 1,340 stations across the country.
The Future of the Historic Building
While the station is set for a major upgrade, the fate of the existing 159-year-old British-era building remains a subject of ongoing internal deliberation. Although initial instructions in October 2025 suggested the demolition of the old structure, railway authorities are currently weighing the possibility of preserving it as a heritage site. The final decision will balance the need for modern infrastructure with the importance of conserving the station’s rich historical legacy.
Enhanced Passenger Amenities
Once completed, Aligarh Junction will offer a significantly improved travel experience for passengers. The modernization plans include:
- Seamless road connectivity and expanded parking facilities.
- Upgraded waiting halls, clean toilets, and wider Foot Over Bridges (FOBs).
- Premium amenities such as AC concourses and executive lounges.
- Dedicated facilities for Divyangjans (persons with disabilities).
- Integration of ‘One Station One Product’ kiosks to promote local heritage.
- Implementation of eco-friendly systems and real-time passenger information displays.
Strategic Development in Uttar Pradesh
This project is part of a broader vision to enhance accessibility and urban integration. In Uttar Pradesh alone, 157 stations have been identified for development under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The project is being managed by various departmental Construction Units, Gati Shakti Units, and the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA). Funding for these significant upgrades is primarily sourced through Plan Head-53: Customer Amenities. By incorporating local cultural architecture into the new design, the Indian Railways aims to ensure that Aligarh Junction remains a point of pride for the city while meeting the demands of modern-day commuters.
