Indian Railways is taking decisive action to enhance safety at the Bhadaura Railway Crossing in Ghazipur by installing a new height gauge barrier. This move is designed to curb the passage of overloaded vehicles that frequently pose a risk to railway infrastructure. The decision follows a frustrating incident on June 16, 2026, where a previously installed barrier was destroyed within just 24 hours, drawing the direct attention of the Ghazipur District Magistrate.
Key highlights of the safety initiative include:
- Strict enforcement: Installation of a robust height gauge to physically prevent overloaded vehicles from entering the crossing.
- Protocol alignment: Adherence to the Ministry of Railways’ January 3, 2025, guidelines mandating sacrificial height gauges and retro-reflective markers.
- Infrastructure upgrade: Sanctioning of a new Road Overbridge at crossing number 84B with an investment of ₹57.66 crore.
- Proactive safety: Increased site management focus to prevent accidents similar to recent regional incidents in Alwar and Dhar.
Enhanced Safety Protocols and Infrastructure
The Ministry of Railways has been pushing for stricter safety measures at Road Over Bridges (ROB) and Road Under Bridges (RUB) across the country. Following the January 2025 mandate, zonal railways are now required to integrate sacrificial height gauges and high-visibility retro-reflective tapes to ensure that drivers are warned well in advance. These measures are critical to preventing structural damage and ensuring the longevity of railway assets.
New Road Overbridge for Ghazipur
Beyond immediate safety barriers, the long-term solution for the area involves the construction of a permanent Road Overbridge at Bhadaura Railway Crossing (84B). Championed by Rajya Sabha MP Sangeeta Balwant, this ₹57.66 crore project is expected to resolve the chronic traffic congestion that has plagued local traders and residents for years.
Learning from Past Incidents
Railway authorities are prioritising this site management after reviewing recent national safety lapses. Specifically, the August 6, 2026, accident in Alwar, involving an overloaded tractor-trolley, and the October 30, 2025, crane collapse in Dhar, have served as stark reminders of the dangers posed by poor site management and unauthorized vehicle movement near railway construction zones. By installing the height gauge at Bhadaura, the administration aims to mitigate such risks and ensure a safer transit environment for all road and rail users.
