India is currently spearheading the world’s most extensive railway station reconstruction programme, aiming to transform the travel experience for millions of passengers. Union Minister of Railways, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, confirmed that the government is systematically upgrading over 1,300 stations nationwide to modernize infrastructure and elevate passenger amenities. Key highlights of this massive infrastructure drive include:
- The initiative is being executed under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, launched in December 2022.
- A total of 1,340 stations have been identified for comprehensive redevelopment.
- Work has already been successfully completed at 170 stations across the country.
- For the 2026-27 financial year, the government has allocated ₹11,972 crore to the scheme.
- As of June 2026, ₹4,633 crore has already been utilized for ongoing development work.
Strategic Focus and Financial Commitment
Speaking at the UP-Japan Investment Meet in Delhi on August 19, 2026, Minister Vaishnaw highlighted the strategic importance of this infrastructure overhaul. The project is not merely about renovation but about creating modern, world-class hubs that cater to the growing needs of Indian travelers. The government has prioritized this sector, with the Minister noting that current budget allocations for the railway sector have increased nine-fold compared to the previous UPA era.
Expansion Beyond Station Redevelopment
While station beautification and modernization remain a top priority, the Ministry is simultaneously focusing on network expansion and connectivity. A notable example of this effort is the recent inauguration of the gauge-converted Kailaras-Sabalgarh-Veerpur rail section. To further benefit local commuters, the Gwalior-Kailaras MEMU service has been extended to Veerpur, ensuring better connectivity for the region.
With 80 stations currently under redevelopment in Madhya Pradesh alone and work progressing rapidly at sites across the nation, the Indian Railways is setting a new benchmark for global rail infrastructure. The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme continues to be a cornerstone of the government’s vision to provide a safer, faster, and more comfortable journey for all passengers.
