Train operations on the Central Railway network escaped major disruption after a heavy construction crane collapsed in Qureshi Nagar, Kurla, Mumbai, during a building demolition operation in the early hours of Friday, August 21, 2026. The accident occurred at approximately 2:40 a.m. when the crane, associated with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), lost its balance while attempting to lift a Poclain machine to the upper level of a building. Key highlights of the incident include the crane striking overhead electric wires on the freight-only Kurla-Trombay line, significant property damage to local residences and vehicles, and an adjusted count of nine people sustaining injuries who were subsequently rushed to local hospitals for treatment without any fatalities reported.
Impact on Central Railway Infrastructure
The falling heavy machinery directly struck the overhead electric (OHE) wires of the Central Railway line connecting Kurla and Trombay. Although the collision caused notable damage to the local railway infrastructure, railway authorities quickly confirmed that train operations remained completely unaffected because this specific route is primarily designated for freight transport rather than regular passenger commuting.
Property Damage and Casualties
Beyond the impact on railway lines, the structural collapse resulted in significant property damage within the residential neighbourhood. The crane crushed two residential homes and caused substantial damage to one car and one auto-rickshaw parked nearby. Initial reports indicated that 4 to 5 individuals sustained injuries during the collapse; however, official confirmations later adjusted the casualty count to 9 people injured. All victims were promptly transported to local hospitals for medical attention, and authorities have confirmed that no fatalities or critical conditions have been reported so far.
Investigation and Debris Clearance
Local police and administrative officials arrived at the site immediately following the accident to initiate a thorough investigation. Debris removal operations are currently underway to clear both the railway tracks and the affected residential area. Law enforcement agencies are closely examining the circumstances surrounding the collapse to determine whether proper safety protocols were strictly followed during the ongoing building demolition process.
