Indian Railways is advancing several key infrastructure projects across Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir to enhance passenger safety and relieve heavy traffic congestion at busy rail crossings. These nationwide development works aim to provide seamless connectivity and modern transit amenities for daily commuters and long-distance travellers alike. Multiple railway infrastructure projects are currently underway in Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir to alleviate traffic congestion and improve safety. Passengers can look forward to significantly reduced waiting times and more reliable train operations as these regional initiatives progress toward completion.
Gonda Railway Infrastructure and Overbridge Projects
In Gonda district, construction has officially commenced at the Katra Road railway crossing (level crossing number 280). This project aims to benefit an estimated 10 lakh residents traveling toward Karnailganj, Katra Bazar, Kauria, Khargupur, and Balrampur by eliminating long traffic delays. Concurrently, local residents have requested similar construction work at the Huzurpur Gate (crossing 282), though railway officials have yet to officially confirm plans for that location.
Separately, administrative approval and an 88.90 crore rupee budget have been secured for a two-lane overbridge at the Katra-Ayodhya road railway crossing (level crossing number 237) in Maskanwa Bazar. Operating under the jurisdiction of the North Eastern Railway, this vital connectivity project is expected to begin soon under the direct supervision of the Setu Nigam. The initiative follows sustained advocacy from Gonda MP and Union Minister of State Kirti Vardhan Singh.
Shahjahanpur Overbridge Progress and Traffic Plans
Moving to Shahjahanpur, construction of the much-needed overbridge at the Ukhri railway crossing in Miranpur Katra has achieved an impressive 70 percent completion milestone. Initiated in August 2024, the project is scheduled for completion by December 2026. To facilitate the final and most complex phase of work directly over the tracks, the Setu Nigam has officially requested permission from the railway administration to temporarily close the crossing. Meanwhile, local authorities are actively finalizing comprehensive traffic diversion plans to ensure minimal disruption for commuters.
Jammu to Katra Rail Section Safety Upgrades
In a major push for network safety in mountainous terrain, the Ministry of Railways has allocated 238 crore rupees for safety and rehabilitation works on the Jammu-Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra rail section. Approved between May and June 2026, this comprehensive engineering undertaking encompasses critical slope stabilization, advanced tunnel rehabilitation, and essential bridge safety measures. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that these targeted upgrades are absolutely essential to guarantee long-term operational reliability and maintain secure rail connectivity in one of the country’s most geographically challenging sectors.
