The Ministry of Railways has recently reiterated its official ticket fare regulations for children traveling across the rail network to help passengers understand booking rules clearly. These guidelines ensure that families can plan their journeys seamlessly while knowing exact charges and seat allocation policies. Travel for children under five is completely free if they share a seat with parents, children aged five to twelve pay half fare without a dedicated berth, and passengers aged twelve and above must pay full adult fares. Families are advised to carry valid age proof such as an Aadhaar card during their train journeys to avoid any inconvenience with ticket examiners.
Understanding Child Fare Rules for Children Under Five
For toddlers and infants under the age of five years, Indian Railways allows travel free of charge under the condition that the child does not occupy a separate berth or seat. However, if parents prefer a comfortable journey and voluntarily request a separate seat or berth for their child under five, the full adult fare is mandatory. Officials strongly recommend that parents include the child’s name during the online reservation process and always carry proper age verification documents like a birth certificate or an Aadhaar card for identification purposes during transit.
Fares for Children Aged Between Five and Twelve
For children aged between five and under twelve years, the fare structure depends entirely on whether a berth is requested. If no separate berth is needed, the passenger is charged half the adult fare, subject to minimum distance requirements. If a separate berth or seat is requested at the time of booking, the full adult fare must be paid. This specific regulation is applicable across all reserved classes including Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and other superfast express trains. Meanwhile, for unreserved general travel, children in this specific age bracket continue to be charged half of the standard adult fare.
Adult Classifications and Automated IRCTC Bookings
Passengers who are aged twelve years and older are officially categorized as adults by Indian Railways. This means they require a full adult fare for both reserved and unreserved tickets, with no child concessions applicable. The Indian Railways reservation system and the official IRCTC portal manage these fare calculations automatically based on the accurate age details provided by passengers during the ticket booking process. Traveling Ticket Examiners are fully authorized to request proof of age from passengers during transit to ensure compliance with these established railway guidelines.
