Indian Railways has achieved a major milestone as the 24.5-kilometer rail section between Biaora and Sonkacch successfully completed a 120 kmph speed trial on Friday, August 21, 2026. This development marks significant progress in the Bhopal-Ramganjmandi new rail line project, which aims to improve connectivity across Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Key highlights of this trial include a thorough two-day evaluation by the Commissioner of Railway Safety, a massive 276-kilometer overall project length, and expected passenger train operations by early 2027 that will significantly reduce travel distance and time between northern and southern India.
Rigorous Safety Inspection and Track Clearance
Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) Guru Prakash specifically traveled from Mumbai to inspect the new route and officially cleared the track for passenger train operations following the evaluation. On August 20, 2026, CRS Guru Prakash, accompanied by Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Pankaj Tyagi and other senior railway officials, conducted a detailed trolley inspection of the Biaora-Sonkacch line. Although the track has successfully passed the speed trial and is physically ready for operations, it currently awaits final formal approval for the movement of regular passenger and freight trains. Railway officials anticipate that passenger train services connecting Bhopal, Biaora, and Ramganjmandi could officially commence operations by March or April 2027.
Project Progress and Future Connectivity Benefits
The ambitious infrastructure project covers a total length of 276 kilometers, with approximately 226 kilometers of track now completed. Prior to this recent success, 187 kilometers of the work had already been finished. Estimates regarding the total cost of the project vary between ₹3,035 crore and ₹5,073 crore, with authorities setting a target to finalize all remaining construction works by December. Once the entire line becomes fully operational, it will establish a direct and seamless link between Bhopal, Sehore, and Rajgarh in Madhya Pradesh alongside the Jhalawar and Kota districts in Rajasthan. Most importantly, this new route is expected to reduce the travel distance by 115 kilometers and shorten travel time by approximately 3 hours for express trains traveling between Jaipur and South India, offering immense convenience to daily commuters and long-distance passengers alike.
