The Ministry of Railways has shared significant progress regarding the Wardha-Nagpur 3rd and 4th line project. On February 9, 2026, officials announced that 123.10 km of the track has been successfully commissioned. This project is a critical part of the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan and is being executed to handle the heavy traffic on this busy corridor.

What is the current status of the work?

The total length of this railway project is 154.94 km. With the recent update, about 79% of the work is now complete. The Central Railway zone targets to finish the remaining sections by late 2026. This remaining work includes the construction of flyovers and remodeling of station yards.

Engineers have recently completed the Wardha-Kaotha section which spans nearly 23 km. This section now features automatic signaling to ensure safety. Other completed sections include the 19 km stretch between Butibori and Sindi. Maintenance tenders are also active for water supply pipelines between Seloo Road and Sewagram.

Project Cost and Passenger Benefits

The estimated cost for this project is approximately ₹1,177.97 Crore. The government has already utilized over ₹1,035 Crore to ensure steady progress. Once fully operational, this line will reduce delays on the Mumbai-Kolkata trunk route. The current tracks operate at over 150% capacity, making this expansion necessary.

This development allows for the introduction of new train services. Passengers can expect more Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat trains starting from Nagpur. It will also support the industrial growth of the Vidarbha region by enabling faster transport of coal, steel, and cement.

Total Length 154.94 km
Commissioned Length 123.10 km
