Indian Railways is implementing a strategic plan to bypass busy stations to reduce train travel time and improve operational efficiency. By constructing bypass lines, superfast trains can skip major congestion points and move directly towards their destinations. This initiative is part of a larger expansion project where the Ministry of Railways has approved over 100 key projects worth 1.53 trillion rupees for the financial year 2025-26.

Key Bypass Projects and Budget Allocations
The railway board has sanctioned several bypass projects across various zones to streamline traffic. These lines will allow trains to avoid engine reversals and long waits at outer signals of busy junctions. Major allocations include the Varanasi to Moradabad line bypassing Lucknow and the Rewari-Rohtak bypass. These projects aim to cover more than 6000 kilometers of the railway network.
| Project Name | Distance (KM) | Budget (Cr) |
|---|---|---|
| Varanasi-Moradabad (Lucknow Bypass) | – | 2000.00 |
| Rewari-Rohtak Bypass | 81.26 | 762.29 |
| Phaphamau-Allahabad Bypass | 12.9 | 265.45 |
| Shahganj Bypass (Didarganj-Bilwai) | 5.7 | 137.00 |
| Ayodhya Bypass Line | 1.50 | 56.00 |
| Ayodhya Cantt (Salarpur-Masodha) | 6.0 | 97.00 |
| Aishbagh-Manaknagar Bypass | – | 81.63 |
How will bypass lines help the common passenger
Bypass tracks are specifically designed to keep long-distance trains away from the heavy traffic of local junctions. When a train does not have to enter a crowded station for a technical stop, it saves approximately 30 to 60 minutes of travel time. This system also reduces the pressure on platform availability at major stations. West Central Railway has already proposed 166 kilometers of bypass lines at eight major stations including Jabalpur, Kota, and Bina to manage increasing traffic. This development will ensure that superfast trains maintain their speed without being halted for local yard modeling or shunting work.
