Indian Railways is set to boost connectivity in the region with the official sanction of a third Vande Bharat Express service connecting Jammu Tawi and Srinagar. Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh announced the approval on August 20, 2026, based on a letter from Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw dated August 18, 2026. This upcoming premium train service aims to significantly enhance passenger convenience and travel options across the challenging terrain.
Key highlights of the new Jammu Tawi Srinagar Vande Bharat Express:
– Assigned train numbers are 26407 and 26408 for this new service.
– The launch is officially scheduled for September 2026 to manage heavy passenger traffic during the Navratri festival period.
– The service will depart Jammu Tawi at 10:30 AM, stop at Shaheed Captain Tushar Mahajan Udhampur at 11:30 AM, and reach Srinagar at 3:10 PM.
– The return journey will depart Srinagar at 4:00 PM, halt at Katra at 6:55 PM and Udhampur at 7:30 PM, and arrive at Jammu Tawi by 8:40 PM.
– This addition takes the total count of Vande Bharat pairs operating on this vital route to three.
Expanding Rail Capacity in the Region
The introduction of this third rake comes in response to immense passenger demand. Currently, two pairs of Vande Bharat trains operate between the two cities. These services were extended to Jammu Tawi on April 30, 2026, following their initial landmark launch between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Srinagar on June 6, 2025. Because these trains routinely run at full capacity, Indian Railways previously increased the coach configuration of existing services from 16 to 20 coaches to accommodate more travellers.
Infrastructure Growth and Local Demands
Significant engineering milestones continue to mark the progress of rail networks in the region. During a recent successful test run, a train touched speeds of 100 kmph across the iconic Chenab Rail Bridge, highlighting the safety and reliability of the modern infrastructure. While the expansion of Vande Bharat services greatly helps long-distance and premium travellers, local residents continue to request the introduction of dedicated local train services to better serve everyday commuting needs within the region.
