The Government Railway Police (GRP) in Uttar Pradesh is upgrading its security system by introducing drone surveillance for railway tracks. The department is in the process of procuring six new drones to monitor tracks and prevent illegal activities. This move comes as a part of a larger plan to strengthen safety, especially for the upcoming Maha Kumbh 2025.

Which areas will be covered by these drones?
The GRP will deploy one drone for each of its six operational sectors to ensure complete coverage. These sectors include Lucknow, Moradabad, Gorakhpur, Prayagraj, Agra, and Jhansi. Director General of Railway Police, Prakash D, confirmed that the procurement is in an advanced stage. These drones will focus on isolated track sections, railway yards, and other high-risk zones where manual patrolling is difficult.
What is the purpose of drone surveillance?
The drones are being introduced to tackle several security challenges and improve passenger safety. The key objectives include:
- Preventing track tampering and suspicious activities.
- Stopping stone-pelting incidents on trains.
- Managing large crowds during major events like Maha Kumbh 2025.
- Providing real-time monitoring of remote areas.
Additionally, Union Minister of State for Railways, Ravneet Singh Bittu, announced a nationwide push for 24-hour patrolling and expanded drone use, particularly on Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs), to prevent blasts and infrastructure damage.
How will Maha Kumbh 2025 security be managed?
For the Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj, a multi-layered security plan is being implemented. Along with the GRP drones, the authorities will use underwater drones for river surveillance and tethered drones for long-term air monitoring. The setup will also be supported by over 2,700 AI-enabled CCTV cameras to ensure a secure environment for pilgrims.
