Southern Railway has taken a significant leap toward modernizing its operations by launching three innovative in-house digital applications: e-TSR, RBMS, and DOST. Unveiled by General Manager R N Singh at the Southern Railway Headquarters in Chennai on July 25, 2026, these tools are designed to digitize critical safety tasks, reduce manual errors, and promote a paperless work culture across the network. Key highlights of this digital transformation include:
- e-TSR (Electronic Train Signal Register): Replaces paper-based registers with automated train movement recording.
- RBMS (Railway Block Management System): Provides a fully digital, end-to-end workflow for managing railway blocks.
- DOST (Delivering Occupational Safety on Track): An advanced GPS-based alert system to protect track-side personnel.
Digitizing Station and Block Operations
The e-TSR app is a major step toward phasing out traditional paper-based train signal registers. By automatically capturing train movement data directly from signaling systems, the app significantly minimizes the scope for manual entry errors and drastically reduces paper consumption at stations. Complementing this is the RBMS app, which centralizes the entire lifecycle of railway blocks. From the initial request to final closure, the app manages performance reports, geo-tagging, and OTP authentication, ensuring seamless coordination for Line, Power, and Signal & Telecommunication (S&T) blocks.
Ensuring Field Safety with DOST
The most critical addition to the safety suite is the DOST app, which is specifically engineered to protect staff working on railway tracks. By cross-referencing real-time train movement data with the GPS location of field workers, the app provides timely yellow and red alerts as trains approach. To ensure maximum awareness, the system utilizes sound, light, vibration, and multilingual voice alerts. It also includes an emergency SOS function for immediate distress signaling.
Currently, DOST has been successfully deployed in five regions. Given its effectiveness in protecting Station Managers, Controllers, and staff in Engineering and Track Maintenance, Indian Railways plans to expand its usage across the entire national network. This initiative marks a milestone in the ongoing mission to leverage technology for a safer and more efficient railway ecosystem.
