Indian Railways has achieved a historic milestone as Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially flagged off India’s first indigenously developed hydrogen train from Jind railway station in Haryana on July 17, 2026. This launch marks a new era in sustainable transport, positioning India alongside global leaders like Germany, Japan, and China in the adoption of clean hydrogen fuel cell technology. The train is set to operate on the Jind-Sonipat route, showcasing the nation’s commitment to green mobility and the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.

Engineering and Technology
The train is a marvel of domestic engineering, built by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. The system integration was managed by Hyderabad-based Medha Servo Drives, utilizing fuel cells from Ballard Power Systems. Unlike traditional locomotives, this train generates electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. To support this operation, a specialized refuelling facility has been established in Jind, capable of storing up to 3,000 kilograms of hydrogen.
A Legacy of Innovation
This project represents a massive leap forward from the early days of Indian Railways, which began with steam engines in 1853. Following the transition to electric traction in 1925 and diesel in 1954, the shift to hydrogen aligns with the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The Ministry of Railways allocated 2,800 crore rupees in the 2023-24 budget to bring this vision to life. Safety remains a top priority, with the entire system undergoing rigorous certification by TUV SUD, featuring advanced heat and leak detection sensors to ensure passenger security.
