Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated eight redeveloped railway stations in Rajasthan on Friday, July 17, 2026, as part of the nationwide Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. This major infrastructure push is designed to modernize travel across the country, with the Rajasthan projects forming a key part of a broader initiative that saw 75 stations upgraded across 20 states at a total cost of ₹1,570 crore.
Key highlights of the Rajasthan station upgrades include:
- Jaisalmer Railway Station: Redeveloped at a cost of ₹140 crore with a unique ‘Sonar Kila’ heritage design.
- Strategic upgrades: Improvements at Barmer (₹18 cr), Dausa (₹15 cr), Khairthal (₹12.79 cr), Gotan (₹20.14 cr), Somesar (₹13 cr), Deeg (₹15 cr), and Gangapur City (₹25 cr).
- Modern passenger amenities: Installation of lifts, escalators, free Wi-Fi, and executive lounges.
- Inclusive design: Enhanced accessibility features including ramps, tactile pathways, and specialized toilets for passengers with disabilities.
Heritage Meets Modernity
The redevelopment follows the government’s theme of ‘Virasat Bhi, Vikas Bhi’ (Heritage as well as Development). The Jaisalmer station, in particular, stands out for its aesthetic integration of yellow sandstone and traditional Rajasthani motifs, reflecting the local culture of the ‘Golden City.’ Beyond aesthetics, the stations have been equipped with digital passenger information systems, upgraded sanitation blocks, and energy-efficient LED lighting to ensure a sustainable and comfortable environment.
Focus on Passenger Experience
Speaking on the initiative, officials from the Jodhpur Division, including Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Hitesh Yadav, highlighted that the primary goal is to provide a safe, convenient, and world-class travel experience. By improving parking facilities and constructing new foot overbridges, the Indian Railways aims to streamline station operations and boost connectivity.
These upgrades are expected to act as a catalyst for local growth, significantly benefiting tourism, trade, and the regional economy. The virtual inauguration ceremony, held from Jalandhar, was attended by key state leaders, including Rajasthan Governor Hari Bhau Kishanrao Bagde, Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, and Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, marking a significant milestone in the state’s rail infrastructure roadmap.
