Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated 75 redeveloped railway stations across 20 states on Friday, July 17, 2026, marking a significant milestone under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Among the stations dedicated to the nation is the historic Haldibari Railway Station in West Bengal, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR). This redevelopment initiative is designed to transform railway hubs into modern, efficient, and passenger-friendly gateways.
- Haldibari Railway Station redevelopment completed at a cost of Rs 26 crore.
- Part of a larger NFR project upgrading three stations for a cumulative cost of Rs 71 crore.
- New features include spacious waiting halls, lifts, Divyangjan-friendly facilities, and modern toilets.
- Strategic importance bolstered by the 2020 reopening of the India-Bangladesh rail link.
A New Era for Haldibari Station
The modernization work at Haldibari, which was successfully completed in March 2026, focuses on both aesthetics and utility. Passengers can now enjoy an upgraded station building, improved circulating areas, and enhanced platform infrastructure. To ensure seamless movement, the station has been equipped with new foot overbridges featuring lifts, making the station fully accessible for all travelers, including those with disabilities. Furthermore, the installation of advanced passenger information systems, improved illumination, and comprehensive landscaping has significantly elevated the overall station experience.
Boosting Connectivity and Heritage
NFR Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma stated that these upgrades are expected to strengthen regional connectivity and provide a major boost to tourism and local trade. The inauguration ceremony at the station was attended by Lok Sabha member Jayanta Kumar Roy.
Established in 1878, Haldibari is one of the oldest railway stations in North Bengal. Its relevance has grown exponentially in recent years, particularly following the reopening of the Haldibari–Chilahati rail link connecting India and Bangladesh in 2020. By integrating modern amenities with its historical legacy, the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme aims to foster socio-economic development in the region. Alongside Haldibari, the NFR also completed the redevelopment of Majbat in Assam and Jalpaiguri Road in West Bengal as part of this ambitious infrastructure drive, which also promotes local trade through the ‘One Station One Product’ initiative.
