Prime Minister Narendra Modi digitally inaugurated the newly redeveloped Jaisalmer Railway Station on Friday, July 17, 2026. This project is a key part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which saw the virtual unveiling of 75 stations across India. The Jaisalmer project, completed at an investment of Rs 140 crore, aims to blend modern passenger amenities with the city’s rich architectural heritage.
Key highlights of the redevelopment include:
- A new G+2 station building spanning 8,327 square meters, featuring a signature golden-yellow stone facade to match local heritage.
- Installation of 10 lifts, 10 escalators, and two modern foot overbridges for passenger convenience.
- Enhanced facilities such as a spacious air concourse, modern waiting rooms, and a 16-bed, 7-room dormitory.
- Complete end-to-end platform shelters and a new pit line for efficient train maintenance.
- Inclusive infrastructure designed specifically for Divyangjan (persons with disabilities).
A Boost for Tourism and Regional Connectivity
Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, attended the local ceremony as the chief guest, highlighting that the modernized station is poised to significantly boost tourism and the local economy. The station’s aesthetic design pays tribute to the historic Sonar Fort, ensuring that the infrastructure remains in harmony with the cultural identity of Jaisalmer.
According to North Western Railway officials, the project is expected to transform the travel experience for thousands of daily commuters and tourists. The station’s upgrade complements recent connectivity improvements in the region, including the introduction of the Runicha Express and Swarna Nagari Express on the Jodhpur-Delhi route, which have been particularly beneficial for defence personnel and local trade.
During the main virtual event held in Jalandhar, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw presented the Prime Minister with a memento featuring the newly developed station. With these state-of-the-art enhancements, Jaisalmer Railway Station is now positioned as a world-class transit hub, ready to support the growing demands of the desert city’s tourism sector and regional development.
