Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated three revitalized railway stations in Chhattisgarh on Friday, July 17, 2026. The stations of Champa, Sarona, and Balod have been upgraded under the prestigious Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, marking a significant milestone in the modernization of the state’s rail infrastructure. The virtual event saw key local representation, with Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu and Member of Parliament Kamlesh Jangde attending the ceremony held at Champa station.
Key highlights of the station upgrades include:
- Sarona railway station was modernized at an approximate cost of ₹14 crore.
- Champa railway station received upgrades worth ₹13 crore.
- The stations now feature new passenger buildings, improved circulating areas, and new foot overbridges.
- Accessibility has been enhanced with the installation of two lifts specifically for elderly and disabled passengers.
- The aesthetics of the stations now incorporate local folk art and regional culture.
Modern Infrastructure for Passengers
The redevelopment initiative focuses on providing a seamless travel experience. Beyond the physical construction of new buildings and increased platform shelters, the stations have been equipped with modern display systems to ensure passengers have real-time access to train information. By optimizing circulating areas, the railway aims to reduce congestion and allow for smoother vehicle and passenger movement within the station premises.
A Broader Vision for Development
These three stations are part of a massive infrastructure drive. The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is currently targeting the modernization of 32 railway stations across Chhattisgarh, with a total projected investment of ₹1680 crore.
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai highlighted the importance of these upgrades, noting that the state’s rail network is undergoing unprecedented expansion. He emphasized that these developments are vital for more than just transportation; they serve as a foundation for economic and social growth, which will eventually boost local trade, tourism, and employment opportunities. The Chief Minister expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Modi and Union Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for their commitment to transforming the state’s railway connectivity.
