Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the redeveloped Barmer Railway Station on Friday, July 17, 2026, marking a significant milestone under the ambitious Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. This initiative is part of a nationwide project to modernize 75 railway stations, with Barmer being one of eight stations in Rajasthan selected for this transformative upgrade. The project, aimed at enhancing passenger comfort and operational efficiency, was completed at a cost of approximately 18 crore rupees.
Key highlights of the upgraded Barmer Railway Station include:
- Modernized entry and exit points with a spacious double-height main entrance.
- Improved infrastructure featuring lifts, escalators, and dedicated parking zones.
- Enhanced passenger facilities including upgraded waiting rooms, retiring rooms, dormitories, and a new VIP lounge.
- Digital passenger information systems and free Wi-Fi for better connectivity.
- Divyang-friendly infrastructure to ensure accessibility for all passengers.
A Modern Hub with Historical Significance
Beyond its current modernization, Barmer Railway Station holds a storied past. Established around 1899, the station was a vital link that connected Barmer to Hyderabad in Sindh, now in Pakistan, by 1900. Before the 1965 India-Pakistan War, the station served as a direct gateway for trains traveling to Karachi. The site also bears scars of history, having been subjected to aerial bombing during the 1971 India-Pakistan War. While the Thar Express briefly reconnected the two nations in 2006, services have remained suspended since August 2019.
Today, the station is shifting its focus toward sustainable and modern operations. In a move to promote eco-friendly infrastructure, a water recycling plant was inaugurated at the station on June 5, 2026, under the administrative supervision of the North Western Railway (NWR). With these upgrades, the station is well-positioned to offer a seamless and comfortable travel experience to the residents of the region, blending its rich historical legacy with 21st-century amenities.
