Indian Railways has introduced a major policy shift aimed at providing essential support to the families of staff members who pass away or become medically incapacitated during their service. The national transporter has officially relaxed the stringent educational criteria previously required for compassionate appointment applicants, ensuring that grieving families face fewer hurdles when seeking employment security.
Key highlights of the new policy include:
• Candidates can now apply for jobs without possessing the mandatory educational qualifications at the time of submission.
• Applicants are granted a grace period of up to five years from the date of the employee’s death or medical invalidation to complete the required education.
• Minors under 18 years of age are given an additional two years to fulfill educational requirements after reaching legal adulthood.
• The new directives were issued by the Railway Board on August 7, 2026, with further clarifications provided via RBE No. 64/2026 on August 11, 2026.
Supporting Families in Need
This policy change, communicated by Director Establishment (N) U.K. Tiwari, is effective immediately across all railway zones and divisions. By allowing a transition period for candidates to upgrade their qualifications, the Railways aims to prevent the summary rejection of applications that previously fell short of recruitment standards. This move is expected to offer a significant safety net to families who lose their primary breadwinner while in service.
Important Eligibility Reminders
While this relaxation is a welcome relief, the Railway Board has clarified that fulfilling educational criteria does not automatically guarantee a job offer. Applicants must still meet all other standard eligibility conditions and regulatory provisions mandated for compassionate employment. Every case will continue to be evaluated on its individual merits to ensure compliance with existing organizational rules. This initiative reflects a more compassionate approach by the national carrier, balancing the need for qualified staff with the welfare of its extended workforce family.
