Indian Railways and IRCTC have clarified the protocols surrounding ticket class changes, including the automatic upgradation process and procedures for involuntary downgrading. Auto-upgradation is a free service intended to optimize vacant berths and reduce waitlists. Eligibility is generally restricted to confirmed or Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) ticket holders booked under the general quota, while Tatkal and Premium Tatkal tickets are excluded. Passengers must opt for the ‘Consider for Auto Upgradation’ feature during booking, which defaults to ‘Yes’ if not deselected.
The Passenger Reservation System (PRS) executes these upgrades automatically during chart preparation, typically a few hours before departure. All passengers under a single PNR are upgraded as a unit; partial upgradation is not permitted. Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTEs) are not authorized to perform these upgrades on board. Notably, if an auto-upgraded ticket is cancelled, charges are calculated based on the original booked class rather than the upgraded class.
Claiming Refunds for Downgrades
In instances where a passenger is downgraded due to coach shortages or overbooking, they are entitled to a fare difference refund. To claim this, passengers must secure a certificate of downgrade from the TTE and file for a refund within two days. Recent updates as of June 1, 2026, allow passengers to request class upgrades for counter tickets up to 30 minutes before train departure. Furthermore, as of May 13, 2025, waitlisted passengers paying full fares may be upgraded by up to two class levels. As of August 2026, Indian Railways is rolling out a new cloud-based PRS developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), capable of processing 1.5 lakh bookings per minute to improve system efficiency and waitlist accuracy.
