Kanpur Central Railway Station reduces operational hours for postal booking counter

Passengers visiting Kanpur Central Railway Station should take note of a significant change in the operating hours of the Station Posting Center (SPC) extension counter. Effective from July 15, 2026, the facility will no longer operate on a 24-hour basis. Instead, the counter has transitioned to a two-shift schedule, now serving customers daily between 8:00 AM and 11:15 PM.

Here are the key details regarding this operational update:

  • The 24-hour service at the Kanpur Central SPC extension counter has been officially discontinued.
  • New operational hours are set from 8:00 AM to 11:15 PM daily.
  • The decision follows a detailed review by the Rail Postal Service Kanpur Postal Division.
  • The change was implemented due to negligible or zero booking activity during late-night hours.

Reason Behind the Schedule Change

According to Senior Superintendent Arun Yadav, the decision to curtail the operating hours was made following a comprehensive departmental review. The analysis revealed that the late-night and extended operating windows saw almost no footfall or postal bookings, rendering the round-the-clock staffing inefficient. By adjusting the hours, the department aims to align its service availability with actual passenger demand and optimize the deployment of resources that were previously tied up during low-traffic periods.

Impact on Passengers

While the station remains a major hub for travelers, those planning to use the postal counter for urgent dispatches or parcel services should ensure they arrive well before the 11:15 PM closing time. This shift reflects a broader trend within Indian Railways to streamline auxiliary services based on real-time usage data. Regular commuters and those who frequently utilize the station’s postal facilities are advised to plan their visits accordingly to avoid any inconvenience during the late-night hours when the counter remains closed.
