Indian Railways has issued a set of guidelines to ensure the safety of all passengers during their journey. Carrying certain dangerous or prohibited items in trains can lead to strict legal action. These rules are designed to prevent fire hazards and maintain a safe environment for everyone on board.

Which items are strictly prohibited in trains?

Passengers are not allowed to carry highly inflammable or dangerous substances. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) monitors stations and coaches to ensure these rules are followed. The following items are banned:

What are the rules for batteries and ghee?

Common electronic gadgets like mobiles, laptops, and power banks are allowed. However, large unsafe lithium batteries, leaking batteries, or explosive batteries are strictly banned. Regarding food items, passengers can carry ghee up to 20 kg, provided it is packed in a leak-proof, sealed container or tin to avoid mess in the coach.

What happens if you are caught with banned items?

Carrying prohibited items can lead to serious consequences depending on the nature of the material. Under the Railway Act, the following actions may be taken:

  • The prohibited items will be seized immediately.
  • A fine up to 1,000 rupees may be imposed under Section 164 of the Railway Act.
  • An FIR can be registered for serious violations.
  • In cases of explosives or dangerous goods, passengers can face imprisonment for up to three years under the Railway Act 1989.
