Technical Challenges of the Ghat Section
The 55-km stretch through the Western Ghats is one of the most difficult terrains in the Indian Railways network. Navigating a 1-in-50 gradient requires precision engineering and advanced safety protocols. The initial launch, which was planned for earlier this year, faced delays due to the need for a specific rake configuration. To ensure passenger safety on these steep downhill stretches, the train must be equipped with an Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system, which automatically engages the brakes if the train exceeds the permitted speed limits.
Safety and Oversight
The South Western Railway (SWR) Mysuru Division is managing the preparations for these trials. Mysuru Divisional Railway Manager Mudit Mittal confirmed that a specialized team from the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) will be on-site to monitor the proceedings. The RDSO team will conduct a comprehensive assessment of the train’s braking capabilities, crew operational readiness, and the overall turnaround time required for the service.
Railway officials have emphasized that commercial operations will only commence once the trials are declared successful and all necessary safety clearances are obtained from the relevant authorities.
