Indian Railways Update: New fine rules for passengers effective from June 20

Indian Railways has updated the penalty rules for various offenses to make train travel safer and more organized. These new provisions came into effect on June 20, 2026, following instructions from the Ministry of Railways. The changes were introduced under the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2026, through a gazette notification issued on June 19, 2026.

What are the new fines for travel violations

The Railway Board has increased penalties for common offenses to discourage irregular travel. Traveling without a valid ticket now carries a minimum fine of ₹500, up from ₹250. If a passenger travels on someone else’s ticket, the ticket will be seized, and they must pay the full fare plus a ₹500 penalty. Unauthorized entry into women’s coaches can lead to a fine of up to ₹2,500.

Penalties for prohibited items and misconduct

The ministry has taken a strict stance on safety and security. Carrying prohibited or dangerous goods in trains will now attract a minimum fine of ₹10,000, and serious cases may lead to imprisonment. Other penalties include ₹2,000 for unauthorized hawking or begging and ₹1,000 for nuisance, abusive language, or intoxication. Unauthorized entry into railway premises or parking violations will cost ₹500.
