A Budget for the Middle Class and Railways

On February 1, 2025, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented a budget aimed at providing relief to the middle class. In the wake of the budget announcement, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav emphasized significant developments regarding railway safety and modernization. Vaishnav described the budget as a “dream budget,” highlighting its foundation for future growth while addressing current needs. He noted a clear focus on integrating modern technology within the railway system.

Increased Funding and Support for Railways

While specific announcements regarding railways were limited, the budget allocated an additional 52 crore rupees to the Ministry of Railways. Vaishnav elaborated that the railways received a gross budgetary support of 2.5 lakh crore rupees. He pointed out the extensive efforts made over the past decade under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which included railway electrification, the construction of new tracks, station improvements, and enhanced safety measures, all contributing to a comprehensive development approach.

New Initiatives and Technological Advancements

The budget introduced new projects worth 4.60 lakh crore rupees, focusing on creating new railway lines, workshops, and maintenance practices. Notably, the announcement included the launch of 100 new Amrit Bharat trains, offering travel for 450 rupees over 1,000 km, alongside the introduction of Vande Bharat services. Regarding the much-anticipated bullet train, Vaishnav reported that construction on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Line is progressing, with 340 km already completed. The minister mentioned the integration of AI to enhance platform operations and assured that ongoing evaluations would ensure data safety amidst growing concerns over technology.
