Indian Railways has taken a major step toward greener transportation by introducing solar-assisted passenger coaches. Spearheaded by the North Central Railway (NCR) and its Prayagraj Division, this initiative follows the recent rollout of hydrogen trains, reinforcing the national transporter’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The project focuses on reducing carbon emissions, improving energy efficiency, and expanding the use of renewable energy across the Indian rail network.
Key highlights of the solar coach initiative include:
- Each coach is equipped with high-efficiency rooftop photovoltaic panels generating 7 kWp of electricity.
- Onboard battery banks ensure an uninterrupted power supply for lights, fans, and mobile charging points.
- Solar panels provide electricity even when the train is stationary, unlike traditional axle-driven alternators.
- Each coach is projected to reduce CO2 emissions by 11 tons annually, equivalent to planting 500 trees.
- The initiative is expected to save between ₹2.80 lakh and ₹3 lakh in annual electricity costs per coach.
Innovation in Power Generation
Unlike conventional coaches that depend on alternators powered by the motion of the train, these new solar-assisted coaches harvest energy directly from sunlight. This ensures that passenger amenities remain functional even during long halts at stations. By minimizing reliance on conventional charging systems, the railway is significantly lowering its operational footprint.
Scaling Up Green Technology
North Central Railway General Manager Naresh Pal Singh has closely monitored the project, praising the technical teams for their ingenuity. According to Dr. Shivam Sharma, CPRO of NCR, this system is a vital component in achieving a greener railway network. Chief Engineer Pulkit Srivastava noted that a large portion of the project was successfully completed using the railway’s internal resources.
Looking ahead, the Indian Railways has ambitious expansion plans. The Jhansi Workshops are now geared to produce **two new solar-assisted coaches per month**. If these initial operational trials prove successful, the technology is expected to be scaled up, potentially retrofitting a vast number of passenger coaches across the nation to support India’s long-term sustainability goals.
