The Railway Board has decided to increase the technical checks for all major and important rail bridges being built across the country. This step was taken to ensure better quality and safety after some recent bridge collapse incidents. Now, it is mandatory to conduct four different types of tests before any bridge component is accepted.
ℹ️: Railway safety boost: Electronic Interlocking systems approved for 20 locations in Malda Division।
What are the four mandatory tests for railway bridges?
Earlier, the strength of bridges was checked only through the Cube Test. Now, the Railway Board has added three more tests to make the process more strict. These tests will be done on all parts including the foundation, pillars, and superstructure.
- Cube Test: The traditional test for concrete strength.
- Core Test: Concrete cores are extracted after casting to check actual strength.
- Permeability Test: This measures how much water can seep through the concrete.
- Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) Test: Ultrasonic waves are used to find hidden cracks or empty spaces inside the concrete.
Who is implementing these new rules and how?
Executive Director Abhimanyu Lamba issued a letter to all railway zones to implement these rules immediately. All construction companies working on big bridges must now follow these four-level checks. The monitoring will happen at both headquarters and field levels.
