The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has reached a major engineering milestone in the development of India’s first bullet train project. The team has successfully completed the launching of all 13 heavy portal beams in Ahmedabad, a critical step in building the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor. These massive structures are essential for allowing the high-speed viaduct to pass safely over existing, busy railway lines.
Key highlights of this development include:
- Completion of all 13 heavy portal beams in the Ahmedabad section.
- The final beam, weighing 1,640 metric tonnes, was installed using a 2,200 MT crawler crane.
- Beams strategically placed over main lines at Maninagar, Vatva, and Sabarmati.
- 80% of the Gujarat section of the project is now complete.
- Priority corridor between Surat and Bilimora scheduled for August 2027 operation.
- Tunneling work has officially commenced in Mumbai toward the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).
Engineering Precision in Action
The installation of the final portal beam was a feat of precision engineering. Measuring 34.5 metres in length, this structure was placed at Sabarmati in just three hours. By utilizing specialized heavy-duty cranes, the NHSRCL ensured that the installation process caused zero disruption to existing train services, maintaining the flow of daily rail traffic while building the future of Indian transport.
Project Timeline and Future Outlook
Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw has reaffirmed that the ambitious 508-km corridor is on track for completion by the end of 2029. The project, which is a cornerstone of the ‘Viksit Bharat’ vision, is being executed in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Progress is not limited to Gujarat; significant advancements are happening in Maharashtra as well. As of July 8, 2026, Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) have begun excavating a 20.37 km long tunnel, which includes a 15.4 km stretch that will be entirely underground. This massive infrastructure undertaking continues to gain momentum, bringing the dream of high-speed rail travel in India closer to reality for millions of passengers.
