India is set to embark on a historic journey toward sustainable rail transportation with the launch of its first hydrogen-powered train. The inaugural service is scheduled for July 17, 2026, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to flag off the train from Jind railway station in Haryana. This landmark project will operate on the 89-kilometer Jind-Sonipat section, signaling a major shift in the nation’s commitment to eco-friendly rail infrastructure.

  • Launch Date: July 17, 2026
  • Route: Jind to Sonipat (Northern Railway)
  • Capacity: 682 seats with a total capacity of 2,600 passengers
  • Technology: Hydrogen fuel cell system producing only water vapor
  • Operational Speed: 75 kmph (Trial speed: 120 kmph)

Engineering and Technology

Developed by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, this 10-coach trainset is a marvel of modern engineering. The design and rigorous trials were overseen by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO). The train utilizes advanced hydrogen fuel cell technology, with core stacks supplied by Ballard Power Systems of Canada. By generating electricity through a chemical reaction, the train ensures zero-emission operations, releasing only water vapor and heat. It stands as the world’s longest hydrogen-powered train on a Broad Gauge platform, boasting a 2,400 kW power output.

Infrastructure and Future Goals

The project, approved by the Ministry of Railways in May 2026, includes a dedicated hydrogen storage and refueling facility at Jind, which has already received a license from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO). Each train unit costs approximately ₹80 crore, with an additional ₹70 crore invested in route infrastructure. The service is expected to cover 356 km daily, completing two round trips between Jind and Sonipat. This initiative is a cornerstone of the ‘Hydrogen for Heritage’ project, through which Indian Railways plans to introduce 35 additional hydrogen trains, supporting the national goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.

Safety and Operations

Before the public launch, the train successfully cleared all safety, emergency braking, and oscillation trials. To ensure passenger safety, the Ministry of Railways has mandated that trained technical personnel must accompany the train for the initial three months of service. While the ceremonial launch is confirmed for July 17, Northern Railway is expected to announce the official date for regular passenger bookings shortly. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini is also closely monitoring the final preparations at the Jind facility.
