Lucknow’s historic Charbagh Railway Station is currently in the midst of a massive transformation under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, yet three vital infrastructure projects have remained stalled for six years. While the station aspires to become a world-class transit hub, these pending works continue to impact daily operations and passenger safety. Key highlights of the current situation include:
- The RRI system replacement remains unfinished, forcing the station to rely on 40-year-old signaling prone to technical failures.
- An ₹8 crore safety project involving drone surveillance, HD CCTV, and advanced scanners is currently on hold.
- Capacity expansion plans to increase tracks between Charbagh and Dilkusha/Alamnagar from two to four lines are delayed.
- The comprehensive redevelopment budget is estimated between ₹400 crore and ₹556.8 crore.
- New infrastructure, including a multi-story building and platform expansion, is scheduled for completion by 2026-2027.
Infrastructure Hurdles Amidst Redevelopment
Railway officials have indicated that the primary reason for these delays is the diversion of focus and resources toward the broader station redevelopment project overseen by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA). Because the RRI system upgrade remains incomplete, the station continues to face operational challenges, including frequent train delays caused by rodent damage to the aging signaling infrastructure. Similarly, the project to add two additional railway lines between Charbagh and Dilkusha/Alamnagar—designed to eliminate the need for trains to wait at outer signals—has failed to gain momentum.
The Path to a World-Class Hub
Despite these bottlenecks, the vision for ‘Greater Charbagh’ remains ambitious. The project includes increasing the number of platforms from nine to eleven, with construction on platforms 10 and 11 already underway. A major milestone is expected by December 2025, when the new multi-story station building and second entry gate are slated to become operational.
Furthermore, commuters can look forward to a modern passenger concourse, wider Foot Over Bridges with integrated Metro access, and a dedicated skywalk connecting the Metro station to both Lucknow Junction and Charbagh. While the coaching complex for Vande Bharat trains has been successfully completed, the overall redevelopment timeline now stretches toward June 2027. Passengers and local observers hope that resolving the pending safety and signaling projects will be prioritized to ensure that the station’s modernization matches the pace of the city’s growing transit demands.
