The long-awaited Dhakoli railway overbridge project has moved closer to reality as Northern Railway and Public Works Department (PWD) officials successfully completed a joint land survey. This critical infrastructure project, aimed at easing daily traffic congestion in the region, is estimated to cost approximately ₹65 crore. The survey, conducted on July 14, 2026, marks a significant milestone in the planning phase for this 800-meter-long structure.
Key highlights of the project development include:
- Joint technical survey conducted by Northern Railway and PWD officials on July 14, 2026.
- The project carries an estimated budget of ₹65 crore.
- Design modifications are underway to address space constraints on the Peermuchalla side.
- Integration plans include a U-turn system and connectivity for MS Enclave vehicles.
- The railway gate currently closes eight times daily due to 50 train movements, causing significant traffic bottlenecks.
Strategic Planning and Design Adjustments
During the survey, the team led by Senior Section Engineer Kamal Kishore identified that while there is sufficient space toward Zirakpur, the Peermuchalla side requires specific design adjustments. To ensure smooth traffic flow, the current plan integrates vehicles from MS Enclave onto the flyover near the Community Health Center in Dhakoli and includes a proposed U-turn system for commuters heading toward Dhakoli. The urgent need for this project is highlighted by the high frequency of train traffic, which disrupts local transit multiple times throughout the day.
Project Background and Administrative Progress
This project has been a priority for local residents, particularly following persistent advocacy by the Unified Resident Welfare Association (URWA). The initiative received formal administrative approval from the Central Government on September 13, 2025.
Initially, local authorities considered an underpass; however, Mohali Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain directed the Zirakpur Municipal Council on February 1, 2025, to pivot to an overbridge design to avoid risks associated with waterlogging, height restrictions, and heavy traffic volume. Following these changes, Union Minister of State for Railways, Shri Ravneet Singh Bittu, confirmed on June 26, 2026, that the construction would commence soon. According to officials, the tender process will be initiated immediately after securing the necessary No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) from the PWD and the district administration.
