The historic city of Kurukshetra is set to witness a major transformation in its rail infrastructure as the new elevated railway station prepares for its formal unveiling. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to virtually inaugurate the station and its 5.9-kilometer elevated track from Jind on July 17, 2026. This ambitious project, which was initiated with a foundation stone laying ceremony by former Chief Minister Manohar Lal on July 22, 2019, has been completed at an approximate cost of 447 crore rupees.
Key highlights of the Kurukshetra elevated station project include:
- 17 red stone domes featuring 14 smaller units and three larger ones for a traditional aesthetic.
- Elimination of five railway crossings within the city to significantly reduce traffic congestion.
- Successful completion of safety and speed trials conducted on July 9, 2026.
- The arrival of the 54048 Jind-Kurukshetra Passenger as the first regular service on July 10, 2026.
- Digital foundation stone laying for a 124 crore rupee Sikh Museum in Umri village.
Architectural Grandeur and Cultural Significance
To reflect the spiritual heritage of Dharmakshetra, the station design incorporates 14 smaller domes measuring 2×2 feet and three larger domes measuring 4×6 feet. These structures are meticulously carved from red stone sourced from Sikandra in Rajasthan’s Dausa district. Furthermore, the aesthetic appeal is enhanced by the use of approximately 2500 square meters of Dholpur stone, ensuring the station serves as a gateway that honors the cultural identity of the region.
Modern Amenities for Passengers
Beyond its striking exterior, the elevated station is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities designed for passenger comfort. Commuters can now access updated ticket counters, spacious waiting areas, and comfortable seating arrangements. The station has also prioritized inclusivity by incorporating accessibility features such as stairs and ramps, along with extensive shelters to protect travelers from the elements.
Following the successful trials, the station is fully operational, marking a significant milestone in Haryana’s railway development. The upcoming event on July 17, 2026, will not only mark the official opening of this modern transit hub but also underscore the government’s commitment to regional development with the addition of the new Sikh Museum project in Umri village.
