Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the newly redeveloped Sanchi railway station on July 17, 2026. As a primary gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Sanchi Stupa, the station has undergone a massive transformation under the Ministry of Railways’ Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. This project is part of a nationwide initiative to modernize over 1,300 stations, with Sanchi standing out as one of 13 stations revamped across Madhya Pradesh.
Key highlights of the Sanchi station redevelopment include:
• Total project cost of ₹15.32 crore for comprehensive modernization.
• Design inspired by Buddhist heritage to reflect the iconic stupas located just 1.5 km away.
• Upgraded infrastructure including widened foot overbridges (from 4.5 meters to 12 meters).
• Enhanced passenger amenities such as air-conditioned waiting rooms, premium lounges, and free internet.
• Improved accessibility features including ramps, special paths for disabled passengers, and new lifts and escalators.
A Future-Ready Transit Hub
According to Saurabh Kataria, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of the Bhopal Division, the station has been engineered to meet infrastructure demands for the next 40 to 50 years. Beyond aesthetics, the station now features advanced digital information systems, LED screens, and 24/7 CCTV surveillance to ensure passenger safety and convenience. The facility also prioritizes sustainability through eco-friendly waste management systems and the installation of purified drinking water kiosks.
Boosting Tourism and Local Economy
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Madhya Pradesh Governor Mangubhai Patel, while Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav and Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia participated from various locations. The revamped station is more than just a transit point; it serves as a showcase for the region. The inclusion of kiosks promoting local art, craft, and products is expected to stimulate the regional economy and provide a significant boost to both domestic and international tourism. With improved connectivity and world-class facilities, Sanchi is now better equipped to handle the influx of visitors seeking to explore India’s rich cultural history.
