India is set to enter a new era of sustainable rail travel as Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares to flag off the nation’s first hydrogen-powered train on July 17, 2026. Departing from Jind, Haryana, this historic launch marks a pivotal step in Indian Railways’ commitment to clean energy and the broader national goals of ‘Viksit Bharat’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’.
- Launch Date: July 17, 2026, from Jind, Haryana.
- Route: The train will operate on the 89-kilometer Jind-Sonipat section.
- Capacity: 10-coach DEMU with a seating capacity of 682 and a total capacity of 2,600 passengers.
- Technology: Uses hydrogen fuel cell technology with zero carbon emissions, emitting only water vapor.
- Future Scope: Part of the ‘Hydrogen for Heritage’ initiative, with 35 more trains planned for rural and heritage routes.
Engineering and Technology Behind the Train
This 10-coach Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) is a masterpiece of indigenous engineering. While the train is designed for an operational speed of 75 km/h, it has successfully demonstrated speeds exceeding 120 km/h during trial runs. The system works by generating electricity through an electrochemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, ensuring the operation is completely free of harmful pollutants.
To support this green initiative, an indigenous hydrogen storage and refuelling facility has been established in Jind, fully licensed by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO). The project is a collaborative effort: the train was manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, with systems integrated by Medha Servo Drives, Hyderabad. The critical fuel-cell stacks were supplied by Canada’s Ballard Power Systems, while the design was meticulously handled by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) in Lucknow.
Aligning with Net-Zero Goals
Indian Railways is aggressively pursuing its target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. By replacing traditional diesel-powered engines on heritage and rural routes with hydrogen technology, the national transporter is significantly reducing its carbon footprint. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has hailed the project as a major technological milestone for the state. With Railway Board officials confirming that all systems are ready, the launch is highly anticipated as a beacon of modern, eco-friendly rail infrastructure in India.
