Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated 75 redeveloped railway stations across India on July 17, 2026, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Following this nationwide launch, an additional seven stations in Odisha were inaugurated on July 18, 2026. These Odisha-based projects, including Balangir, Bapali, Parakh Mundi, Tarache, Kesinga, Baripada, and Bhimagad, were completed at an approximate cost of 9 crore rupees, with architectural designs specifically curated to represent local culture and heritage.

Key highlights of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme expansion include:

  • 75 stations inaugurated nationwide on July 17, 2026, followed by 7 stations in Odisha.
  • The initiative focuses on modernizing 1275 railway stations across India with a long-term vision.
  • Key hubs inaugurated include Jalandhar Cantt, Modinagar, Hi-Tech City, Pisca, Muri, Baramati, Nandura, and Harrawala.
  • Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirms 261 stations completed, with targets of 400 by 2026 and 700 by 2027.
  • Emphasis on Divyangjan-friendly infrastructure, including lifts, ramps, and tactile paths.

Modernizing the Passenger Experience

Launched by the Ministry of Railways in February 2023, the scheme is designed to transform the travel experience for millions of Indians. The redevelopment plan goes beyond aesthetic upgrades, focusing on improved station access, modernized waiting rooms, and enhanced restroom facilities. To cater to the digital age, stations are being equipped with free Wi-Fi and advanced passenger information systems. Furthermore, the introduction of ‘One Station One Product’ kiosks aims to boost local economies by providing a platform for regional artisans and businesses.

Future Infrastructure Goals

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has laid out an ambitious roadmap for the coming years. With 261 stations already transformed, the Ministry is working on a fast-track timeline to complete 400 more by 2026 and a total of 700 by the end of 2027. These stations are being built with a focus on holistic development, including the addition of executive lounges and dedicated spaces for business meetings. In Maharashtra, Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Ajit Pawar noted that the redevelopment of Baramati Railway Station is expected to act as a major catalyst for regional economic, industrial, and educational growth, setting a blueprint for how railway infrastructure can drive local development across the country.
