Indian Railways to launch online luggage booking for confirmed ticket holders from July 31 2026

Indian Railways is set to transform the passenger travel experience by introducing a seamless online luggage booking system for passengers with confirmed tickets. Starting July 31, 2026, this nationwide initiative will eliminate the long-standing requirement for travelers to visit parcel offices to book excess baggage, allowing the entire process to be managed through the official IRCTC ticketing platform.

Key highlights of the new luggage policy:

  • Facility goes live nationwide on July 31, 2026.
  • Excess luggage can be booked online at 1.5 times the standard rate.
  • The service is integrated directly into the online reservation portal.
  • Prohibited items like gas cylinders and explosives remain strictly banned in passenger coaches.

Understanding weight limits and class-wise rules

Under the new guidelines, passengers can carry luggage beyond their free allowance by paying for the excess weight, provided it stays within class-specific maximum limits. AC First Class passengers receive a 70 kg free allowance with a maximum cap of 150 kg. First Class and AC 2-Tier passengers are entitled to 50 kg free, with a maximum limit of 100 kg. For Sleeper Class, the free allowance is 40 kg with an 80 kg maximum, while Second Class allows 35 kg free, capped at 70 kg. Notably, for AC 3-Tier and AC Chair Car, the limit is fixed at 40 kg, and online booking for excess luggage is not permitted for these specific classes.

Modernizing baggage regulations

This move is part of a broader push by the Railway Ministry to modernize passenger services and implement more stringent baggage regulations, similar to standards seen in the aviation industry. Railway officials have confirmed that the system is designed to provide greater convenience to passengers while ensuring safety on board. Passengers are reminded that carrying unregistered or oversized baggage will attract penalties. Items like large trunks, commercial goods, or hazardous materials must still be booked through the designated luggage office for transport in the brake van, as they are not permitted inside passenger compartments. This digitisation effort marks another step toward making Indian Railways more efficient and user-friendly for all travelers.
