Indian Railways strengthens tracks on Chaukaghat Ganeshpur route to prevent flood damage

Indian Railways has launched a proactive initiative to reinforce railway tracks along the Chaukaghat-Ganeshpur route to protect critical infrastructure from potential flooding caused by the Ghaghra River. As the monsoon season progresses, authorities are placing protective materials alongside the newly constructed third railway line to ensure the stability of the tracks and the safety of passengers. This effort is part of a larger strategy by the North Eastern Railway to maintain operational continuity across flood-prone regions.

Key highlights of the infrastructure developments include:

  • Reinforcement measures are currently underway on the Chaukaghat-Ganeshpur section to combat Ghaghra river flooding.
  • A 11.77 km third electrified railway line between Burhwal and Ghaghra Ghat was successfully commissioned following safety inspections in April 2026.
  • The third line was completed in December 2025 to reduce congestion and boost line capacity.
  • Foundations for a fourth railway line in the same region have already been laid.
  • The Uttar Pradesh government has sanctioned 22 flood protection projects worth ₹115 crore in Bahraich to secure the riverbanks.

Focus on Infrastructure and Safety

Following the completion of the major bridge over the Ghaghra (Saryu) River, the North Eastern Railway’s Lucknow division has been working to streamline traffic flow. The introduction of the third line is a significant milestone in reducing the bottleneck issues that previously plagued this route. By proactively addressing flood risks, the railways aim to prevent the service disruptions that often occur during peak monsoon months.

Broader Flood Mitigation Efforts

Beyond the railway’s internal safety protocols, state authorities are also taking action. On July 21, 2026, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath approved a comprehensive package of ₹115 crore dedicated to flood protection projects along the Ghaghra River in Bahraich. These measures are designed to provide a secondary layer of protection for the surrounding infrastructure, including vital rail corridors.

While these large-scale projects are underway, some local communities have expressed caution. Residents in Ballia have raised concerns regarding the quality and long-term effectiveness of an ₹8 crore anti-erosion project located in Maharajpur village. As the monsoon progresses, Indian Railways continues to monitor track conditions closely across all divisions, including Malda, to ensure that rail operations remain safe and uninterrupted for commuters.
