Indian Railways has officially launched a pilot project to equip Traveling Ticket Examiners (TTEs) with body-worn cameras to monitor interactions during ticket inspections. This initiative, which focuses on enhancing transparency and building trust between railway staff and passengers, commenced on July 22-23, 2026, within the Prayagraj Division of North Central Railway (NCR).
- Deployment Phase: Initially, 30 body cameras are being used on two major train routes.
- Key Routes: The 12417/12418 Prayagraj Express and the 12451/12452 Shram Shakti Express.
- Device Features: High-definition recording, audio capture, night vision, and a 20-hour battery life.
- Data Security: The system is tamper-proof to ensure footage integrity for dispute resolution.
Technology for Better Accountability
Dr. Shivam Sharma, the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of North Central Railway, confirmed that the cameras are designed to record all ticket checking activities in both audio and video formats. By providing an impartial record of events, the railway administration aims to reduce disputes and ensure that both passengers and TTEs maintain professional conduct. The staff operating these trains have already undergone specialized training to handle the devices effectively.
Future Expansion Plans
The implementation of these body cameras is a strategic move to modernize railway operations. The recorded footage acts as reliable evidence in the event of complaints, effectively deterring misconduct. This project is a direct result of the Union Railway Minister’s vision to integrate advanced technology into daily railway security and passenger services. If the pilot project proves successful in the North Central Railway, Indian Railways intends to expand the use of body cameras across other divisions, eventually aiming for a nationwide rollout to standardize the ticket checking process across the entire network.
