Indian Railways is set to simplify travel for passengers by launching an online excess luggage booking feature starting July 31, 2026. This digital initiative, directed by the Railway Board, integrates baggage booking directly into the train ticket reservation system, removing the hassle of visiting parcel offices. Key updates include:

• Online booking goes live on July 31, 2026.

• Excess baggage can be booked alongside train tickets.

• Penalty for unbooked excess luggage is set at six times the standard rate.

• Strict size and weight limits apply to all travel classes.

• Prohibited items remain banned on all trains.

Understanding Luggage Allowances and Charges

Passengers must be aware of their specific class limits to avoid penalties. AC First Class passengers receive a 70 kg free allowance (up to 150 kg max), while First Class and AC 2-tier travelers get 50 kg free (up to 100 kg max). Sleeper Class allows 40 kg free (up to 80 kg max), and Second Class permits 35 kg free (up to 70 kg max). Notably, for AC 3-tier and AC Chair Car, the limit is fixed at 40 kg, meaning no excess luggage is permitted for these classes. If you are carrying luggage beyond the free allowance, you will be charged 1.5 times the standard luggage rate.

Important Rules and Safety Guidelines

Indian Railways has implemented strict regulations regarding the physical dimensions of luggage allowed inside coaches. For most classes, the maximum size is 100 cm x 60 cm x 25 cm, while AC 3-tier and AC Chair Car have a smaller limit of 55 cm x 45 cm x 22.5 cm. Any luggage exceeding these dimensions must be booked in the train’s luggage or parcel van.

Passengers who fail to book their excess luggage in advance will face penalties up to six times the standard rate if caught during the journey or at the destination. Furthermore, if you are booking luggage to travel on the same train, you must deposit it at the luggage office at least 30 minutes before the scheduled departure. As always, the transport of dangerous, inflammable, or explosive items remains strictly prohibited for the safety of all passengers.
