Indian Railways is transforming the passenger experience by aggressively expanding its QR code-based digital payment ecosystem across the nation. This initiative aims to eliminate long queues at ticket counters and promote a seamless, cashless journey for travellers. By integrating UPI-based payments, the railway is making transactions faster, more secure, and highly convenient for millions of daily commuters.
Key highlights of the new digital rollout include:
• QR code payment devices are now operational at hundreds of stations, including Koderma and the wider Dhanbad zone.
• Payments for tickets, onboard catering, and station amenities can be made via UPI, Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm.
• TTEs can now collect fines for ticketless travel or excess luggage via UPI-linked handheld terminals.
• New transparency measures include QR codes on food packets and mandatory digital ID cards for catering staff.
• Strict enforcement of the ‘Rail One’ app for valid digital ticketing starting July 10, 2026.
Expanding Digital Payments Nationwide
To reduce dependency on cash, the railway has installed QR code display devices at major stations across the Dhanbad zone and beyond. This modernization is not limited to ticket windows; it extends to the dining experience. Passengers can now pay for onboard catering services using their preferred digital wallets, ensuring a hassle-free transaction process. Furthermore, to streamline enforcement, Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTEs) are now equipped with handheld terminals linked to the UPI system, allowing for the instant payment of fines for ticketless travel or excess luggage, a policy effective since March 8, 2026.
Enhanced Transparency and Staff Accountability
Indian Railways is also leveraging QR technology to improve internal transparency. Starting March 19, 2026, all catering vendors are required to carry QR-enabled ID cards. Additionally, food packets will now feature QR codes that allow passengers to verify the kitchen name and manufacturing date, ensuring better food safety and quality control.
The New Standard for Digital Tickets
In a significant move toward a fully paperless environment, the railway has announced a strict policy regarding digital tickets. Effective July 10, 2026, only tickets displayed directly on the ‘Rail One’ app will be accepted as valid during ticket inspections. Passengers are advised that screenshots, PDF versions, or WhatsApp copies of tickets will no longer be considered valid and may result in penalties. This shift underscores the commitment of Indian Railways to creating a unified, secure, and technologically advanced travel ecosystem for all passengers.
