Indian Railways is hitting a major milestone in its quest for a “zero accident” network by rapidly scaling up the deployment of Kavach, its indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system. Designed to provide a fail-safe environment for passengers, the latest iteration, Kavach 4.0, is now operational across key high-density routes, ensuring that safety remains the top priority for the national transporter.
Key highlights of the Kavach rollout include:
- Kavach 4.0 is now commissioned on 2,569 route kilometers as of July 20, 2026.
- The system is fully active on the Delhi-Mumbai (1,423 km) and Delhi-Howrah (1,146 km) corridors.
- A total of 6,153 locomotives have already been equipped with the system nationwide.
- The initiative is expanding with work underway on an additional 21,858 km of high-density network routes.
Strategic Implementation on Major Corridors
Following a written reply in the Lok Sabha on July 29, 2026, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that the rollout of this advanced safety technology is being significantly expedited. On the critical Delhi-Mumbai route, the coverage includes the stretch between Tilak Bridge, Palwal, Mathura, Kota, Nagda, Ratlam, Vadodara, and Virar, with an additional 96 km section between Vadodara and Ahmedabad also secured.
How Kavach Enhances Passenger Safety
Developed by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), Kavach holds the prestigious Safety Integrity Level (SIL-4) certification, representing the highest global safety standard. The system acts as a vital safety net for Loco Pilots; it automatically applies brakes if a pilot fails to respond to signals or exceeds speed limits, particularly in low-visibility conditions like dense fog.
This technological push is yielding tangible results. Over the last 12 years, Indian Railways has seen a massive 88% drop in train accidents, falling from 135 incidents in 2014-15 to just 16 in 2025-26. Furthermore, the Consequential Accident Index has plummeted by 91% during the same timeframe, proving that the commitment to modernizing rail infrastructure is effectively safeguarding millions of daily commuters across the country.
