The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has introduced a new beta version of its website aimed at resolving long-standing issues with booking speed and payment failures. Launched on July 15, 2026, the updated platform is designed to handle high traffic more efficiently, directly benefiting passengers attempting to secure last-minute travel.
- Over 5% increase in successful bookings within the first three minutes of the Tatkal window.
- 3% improvement in bookings completed within the first five minutes.
- 2% improvement in bookings completed within the first 30 minutes.
- 89.84% of total ticket bookings were completed online during July 2026.
Enhanced User Interface and Features
To improve the passenger experience, the new beta website features a modern ‘Glassmorphism’-inspired design. IRCTC has worked to simplify the interface by removing unnecessary CAPTCHAs and intrusive pop-ups. A key feature for frequent travelers is the ‘Master List’ option, which allows users to save passenger details in advance, significantly reducing the time spent filling out forms during the high-pressure Tatkal window. Furthermore, travelers can now view seat availability across all classes—including Sleeper, AC 3-tier, and AC 2-tier—on a single, unified screen.
Stricter Security and Tatkal Protocols
While the technology has improved, IRCTC maintains strict regulations to ensure fair access. Since July 1, 2025, Aadhaar authentication has been mandatory for all online Tatkal bookings. Additionally, an Aadhaar-based OTP verification process became compulsory for all Tatkal transactions across online platforms, PRS counters, and authorized agents as of July 15, 2025.
For those planning their travel, remember that Tatkal bookings open at 10:00 AM for AC classes and 11:00 AM for non-AC classes, one day before the journey date. Each PNR is limited to a maximum of four tickets. To prevent hoarding, authorized agents are strictly prohibited from booking tickets during the first 30 minutes of the Tatkal window.
Despite these upgrades, IRCTC has acknowledged that some users still face high-load errors on particularly busy routes. The corporation remains committed to a digital revolution and is continuously refining the beta platform based on real-time user feedback to ensure a smoother, more equitable booking experience for all passengers.
