Indian Railways expands mobile ticketing services to halt stations to reduce passenger queues

Indian Railways has officially extended its Mobile Unreserved Ticketing System (M-UTS) to halt stations, a move designed to streamline the ticketing process and eliminate the long queues often seen at station booking counters. By integrating the M-UTS Sahayak scheme, the national transporter is not only improving passenger convenience but also allowing commercial staff to focus more effectively on ticket checking and station management duties.

  • M-UTS Sahayak scheme now operational at various halt stations across India.
  • Sahayaks use mobile devices and Bluetooth printers to issue tickets on the spot.
  • Services include 2nd Class, Mail/Express, Superfast, Platform, and Season tickets.
  • The RailOne app has replaced the legacy UTS app as of March 1, 2026.

How the M-UTS Sahayak System Works

Under this initiative, designated assistants known as Sahayaks are deployed at stations equipped with mobile terminals and Bluetooth-enabled printers. These personnel can issue a wide range of unreserved tickets, including 2nd Class Ordinary, Antyodaya, Amrit Bharat, Namo Bharat, and both 1st and 2nd Class Season tickets. To maintain security, the system is regulated by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) and utilizes geo-fencing, ensuring that tickets can only be generated within the specific station perimeter. It is important to note that Sahayaks are prohibited from issuing reserved tickets or applying passenger concessions, and they cannot process refunds or cancellations.

Success and Expansion

The scheme began as a pilot project in late 2025 at major hubs, including Mumbai CSMT (October 31, 2025), Chennai Central (November 3, 2025), and Bengaluru KSR (November 4, 2025). Following its success, the Palakkad Division of Southern Railway became the first to implement the system across ten halt stations in early 2026. The impact has been significant; by February 28, 2026, Sahayaks at Mumbai CSMT successfully served 2.70 lakh passengers, generating Rs 3.54 crore from nearly 1.90 lakh tickets in just four months.

Transition to RailOne App

As part of the digital modernization drive, the original UTS mobile app was officially discontinued on March 1, 2026. Passengers are now directed to use the RailOne app for all mobile ticketing needs. As an incentive for digital adoption, Indian Railways offered a 3% discount on unreserved tickets booked via digital payments through the new platform between January 14 and July 14, 2026.
