In a significant move to tackle chronic waterlogging in Varanasi, the Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) and the Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC) have formalised a major infrastructure agreement. Signed on Monday, August 3, 2026, this collaboration focuses on developing a 14.2-kilometer integrated storm water drainage network that will serve both the railway township and neighboring municipal areas.
Key details of the project include:
- Total Project Value: ₹45.30 crore
- Funding Split: ₹24 crore from BLW and ₹21.30 crore from VMC
- Scope: Construction of an extensive drainage system from Pahadi Gate to Chitaipur Road
- Objective: Permanent mitigation of waterlogging and protection of railway infrastructure
Strengthening Infrastructure and Safety
The project is designed to provide a lasting solution to the perennial waterlogging issues that have historically affected the BLW West Colony and adjacent Nagar Nigam residential areas. By creating a robust drainage network, the initiative aims to safeguard railway quarters from water-related damage and ensure the long-term structural integrity of buildings in the region. Under the terms of the agreement, BLW will oversee the construction of interceptor drains within its premises, while the VMC will manage the development of the connecting storm water network throughout the municipal zones.
Collaborative Leadership and Waste Management
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was officially exchanged by BLW Deputy Chief Engineer Saket and VMC Additional Municipal Commissioner Durgesh Mishra. The signing ceremony took place in the presence of BLW General Manager Ashutosh Pant and Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal.
Beyond the drainage project, the partnership also extends to environmental sustainability. The two organizations signed two additional service agreements focused on modernizing solid waste management within the BLW township. These agreements cover the bioremediation of legacy waste and the implementation of daily solid waste processing systems, ensuring that the township remains compliant with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026. This dual-focus approach highlights a commitment to both civil infrastructure development and modern sanitation standards for the benefit of railway employees and the wider Varanasi community.
