Indian Railways is rapidly scaling up the rollout of Kavach 4.0, its indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, to ensure a safer and more efficient travel experience for passengers. As of August 6, 2026, the Ministry of Railways confirmed that this advanced safety technology has been commissioned over 2,633 route kilometers, with significant infrastructure upgrades currently underway across the national network.

Modernizing Rail Safety Standards
Developed under the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives, Kavach 4.0 received RDSO approval on July 16, 2024. The system acts as a critical safety net, designed to prevent collisions by automatically applying brakes if a driver fails to control the train, and specifically protecting against ‘Signal Passed at Danger’ (SPAD) incidents. Beyond collision prevention, the system improves location accuracy and provides better signaling information during low visibility, such as heavy fog.
Strategic Infrastructure Investment
The commitment to safety is backed by significant financial allocation. By July 2026, Indian Railways utilized ₹1.15 lakh crore, representing 39% of its FY27 capital expenditure budget, with a dedicated ₹2,066 crore earmarked specifically for Kavach projects in the 2026-27 fiscal year. Future plans are equally ambitious, with 7,190 additional locomotives and 1,200 EMU/MEMU rakes slated for Kavach installation.
Priority Corridors and Future Operations
Deployment is currently prioritized on high-density routes, including key sections of the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah corridors. Additionally, the Kota-Mathura section is now reported as ready for commissioning. With the inclusion of an SOS facility and automatic whistling at level crossings, Kavach 4.0 is set to become the backbone of Indian Railways’ signaling modernization, ensuring that the next generation of train travel is both faster and significantly safer for all passengers.
