Indian Railways has officially commenced extensive preparations for the upcoming Magh Mela 2027 in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, as the national transporter readies itself to facilitate travel for an estimated 200 million pilgrims. The mega religious event is scheduled to take place from January 15, 2027, to March 6, 2027. To ensure a seamless experience for devotees, the railway board is focusing on enhanced crowd management, special train operations, and robust infrastructure upgrades across key stations.

Strategic Planning and Infrastructure Upgrades
Under the leadership of the North Central Railway’s Prayagraj Division, officials are utilizing data and insights gathered from the 2026 Mela to refine operations. During a high-level review meeting held on July 31, 2026, Divisional Railway Manager Rajneesh Agarwal highlighted that providing top-notch services is the primary objective. The administration is currently finalizing plans for the deployment of special Mela trains to handle the surge in passenger traffic during the six major bathing festivals.
To manage the massive influx of devotees, authorities are installing temporary passenger shelters, additional ticket counters, and Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs). Furthermore, passenger safety and convenience will be bolstered by improved signage, expanded CCTV surveillance networks, dedicated medical aid centers, and upgraded sanitation and drinking water facilities.
Coordination and Budget Allocation
The railway is working in close coordination with the Magh Mela administration and various Uttar Pradesh government departments to ensure synchronized operations. Financial backing for the event remains a priority, with the state government allocating INR 100 crore, while a proposal for an additional INR 100 crore has been submitted, bringing the total project budget to INR 200 crore. These funds are earmarked to transform the station premises into pilgrim-friendly hubs, ensuring that the heavy footfall expected throughout the 50-day period is handled with maximum efficiency and minimal congestion.
