Indian Railways clarifies there is no free return travel for passengers who miss their destination

Indian Railways has officially addressed a common passenger query regarding travel procedures, clarifying that passengers who oversleep and miss their designated station are not entitled to free return travel. This stance was formally reiterated by the national transporter in a social media update on August 5, 2026, aimed at clearing up misconceptions about onboard travel regulations.

  • No free return travel is provided if a passenger misses their destination stop.
  • The ‘Destination Alert’ service is available for a nominal fee to help passengers wake up before arrival.
  • Reserved passengers missing their boarding station are protected by the ‘Two-Stop Rule’.
  • Boarding stations can be changed up to 30 minutes before the train’s scheduled departure.

How to avoid missing your stop

To help travelers avoid the inconvenience of overshooting their destination, Indian Railways offers a helpful ‘Destination Alert’ service. By paying a nominal fee, passengers can receive a mobile alert approximately 20 minutes before the train reaches their destination. To activate this service, passengers can simply dial the railway helpline at 139 or send an SMS with the text “ALERT [PNR]” to 139.

Rules for boarding station changes and no-shows

It is important to distinguish these rules from those governing the initial boarding point. For passengers with reserved tickets who miss their boarding station, the ‘Two-Stop Rule’ ensures that the Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) cannot reallocate their seat for at least one hour or until the train passes the next two stations, whichever comes first.

Furthermore, a policy update effective April 1, 2026, introduced by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, allows passengers to change their boarding station up to 30 minutes before the train’s scheduled departure from its originating station. However, passengers should be aware that if they fail to board from the specified station and do not provide prior information, the TTE is authorized to mark the ticket as ‘Not Turned Up’ (NTU) once the boarding window expires. In such cases, the berth may be reallocated to other passengers on the waiting list, and the original passenger will forfeit their claim to the seat.
