By allowing the upper section to be separated from the underframe via a specialized locking mechanism, this design drastically streamlines maintenance and repair operations. Revolutionizing Freight Maintenance
According to Dr. Shivam Sharma, CPRO of North Central Railway, this technological leap is set to transform how Indian Railways manages its massive fleet of goods trains. Currently, about 680 freight wagons require repairs daily across the network, with approximately 255 of these units needing only body-related maintenance. By isolating the upper body, workshops can perform targeted repairs without needing to dismantle the entire structure, thereby keeping more wagons in active service.
Operational Efficiency and Accident Recovery
The primary advantage of this system lies in its versatility. Beyond routine maintenance, it serves as a critical tool during accident restoration. In the event of a derailment or collision, teams can now simply remove the damaged upper section, which significantly speeds up the clearance of tracks and the restoration of rail traffic. This mechanical innovation is designed to be highly practical, as it does not require complex electronic components, making it easy to manufacture and deploy across various maintenance depots and freight terminals.
By cutting down the time wagons spend idle in workshops, Indian Railways expects a substantial boost in operational efficiency.
